AWARD INFORMATION
The scholarship is named after the granddaughter of John and Annie Sadilek Pavelka, who served as models for Anton and Antonia Shimerda in Cather's novel My Antonia and for Anton and Mary Rosicky in the short tale "Neighbor Rosicky." The award offers financial support to a high school graduate from Nebraska who intends to enroll as a history or English major at a recognized college or institution. The applicant must be a senior in high school who intends to enroll as a first-year college student and major in either English or History at a recognized institution of higher learning. Selection is based on the applicant's academic promise, creativity, and character. The $1,000 scholarship is not renewable and must be paid in full at the start of the first year of study. However, you must adhere to the following rules when writing the essay: Do not provide story summaries; your audience are aware of how skillfully the Cather works you have chosen have been done. Remember to give your paper a title. The winner is requested to read their essay at the Red Cloud Willa Cather Spring Conference. Every year, the first weekend in June is when the Spring Conference is held. Scholarship awardees will be emailed information regarding presentations.
