The Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest provides a remarkable opportunity for talented young women poets to showcase their literary prowess and be recognized for their creative expressions. This prestigious contest invites sophomores and juniors in high school to submit two of their best poems for consideration.
There is no fee required to enter, ensuring accessibility for all aspiring poets.
Winners of the contest are rewarded with a range of exciting prizes and opportunities. The first-place winner receives a cash prize of $350 and the distinction of having their work published in Cargoes, Hollins' esteemed student magazine. Additionally, they are awarded ten copies of the magazine and a renewable scholarship of up to $5,000 for Hollins University. The first-place winner also receives the extraordinary opportunity to attend the Hollinsummer creative writing program with free tuition and housing.
The second-place winner of the Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest receives the honor of having their work published in Cargoes and receives two copies of the magazine. They are also awarded a renewable scholarship of up to $1,000 for Hollins University and a $500 scholarship to attend the Hollinsummer program.
Applicants must be female students who are currently in their sophomore or junior year of high school. This contest specifically aims to celebrate and empower young women poets, providing a platform for their voices to be heard and their talent to be acknowledged.
